If Dracula owned a jazz club, The Secret Sounds would be the house band. Born in late 2022, this innovative duo emerged from the unlikely confluence of classic jazz, vintage horror, and Southern Gothic literature, creating an atmosphere that's both nostalgic and delightfully otherworldly.
The Secret Sounds features the haunting vocals of Britt Reece and the masterful guitar work of Brennen Reece, who found their musical chemistry through a shared passion for jazz standards, glam rock, and horror films. What began as traditional jazz performances at private events quickly evolved into something more distinctive – a sophisticated blend of mid-century jazz with a darker, Southern Gothic edge.
Performing in the tradition of legendary duos like Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass or Julie London and Barney Kessel, The Secret Sounds approach each performance as a unique exploration. Their extensive repertoire weaves together jazz standards, classic blues, and reimagined country songs, with every performance improvised around a loose framework – ensuring no song is ever played the same way twice.
In March 2023, the duo began crafting original material that would become their debut EP, "The Secret Sounds Haunt Your Hi-Fi" (released June 2024). The project was preceded by two singles, "Ghosts" and "Take Your Heart Out" (June 2023), which established their signature sound – a seamless fusion of vintage jazz sophistication with Southern Gothic storytelling.
Based in the Auburn-Opelika area of Alabama, The Secret Sounds have built a devoted following through their regular performances at select venues across the region. Their live shows transport audiences to a parallel universe where beatnik poets sip artisanal cocktails in a haunted jazz club, and every song tells a story that's equal parts vintage glamour and delicious darkness.
Currently, while maintaining an active performance schedule, the duo is recording new original material for their upcoming full-length LP, further exploring the shadowy intersection of jazz sophistication and Southern Gothic narrative.
